Social Media – What’s The Abbreviation? [POLL] – NOW CLOSED

[tweetmeme source=”social_penguin” only_single=false http://www.thesocialpenguinblog.com]

THE POLL IS NOW CLOSED – RESULTS WILL BE PUBLISHED 05/03/2011 THANKS FOR VOTING!

This post was sparked off by a tweet I recently sent:

@mike_mcgrail

The tweet that got me thinking...

I have noticed an increased use in ‘SoMe’ in blog posts and comments – I just plain don’t like it, it makes me cringe a little. Many responded with similar views while others stated they were happy with its use. I tend to use ‘soc med’ – people may not be a fan of it either, but I think it does the job and saves space on the likes of Twitter. With Twitter in mind, hashtags can be far from uniform, leading to numerous searches for the same content, or the adding of many to a Tweet – #socialmedia #socmed #some #SM #S&M… see the issue?

So can we try to create a standard? I’m sure it would help us all in one way or another. Vote for your favourite below and let’s see if we can take it from there…

Look forward to hearing your views! Leave deeper thoughts in the comments!

I ran into this post thanks to the notice from Petya Georgieva, and I have to say, while not using the full “social media”, which I prefer, it’s SM all the way.
Going to vote on the poll right now.

      Hi Gabriele

Thanks for voting! I agree it would be ideal if we could use ‘social media’ at all times but things always need to be shortened!

      Cheers,

      Mike

I’m going with #social. Not terribly long, and avoids the s&m connotations. SoMe doesn’t bother me as much as it seems to bother you, but it’s not as clear.

      Hello Deborah,

Thanks for reading and voting! Social works for me although it could apply to many different things. I’m hoping for 50 votes, yet to reach that but as soon as that happens I will publish result.

      Cheers,

      Mike

Good idea to have the poll, Mike.
While I might use an abbreviation in print or on Twitter etc, I always talk about Social Media with no contraction in discussions or conversation.
“SoMe” is awful and SM makes me think of small size, for some reason. I’ve suggested “S-Med” although I do think finding an agreeable standard term is difficult.

    Cheers,
    Mike

      Hi Mike,

Thanks very much for taking the time to comment! I think a standard term is probably too unrealistic and people will use there preferred option regardless. Glad you agree re SoMe! Hope to see you soon.

      Cheers

SoMe sounds very much like wanky marketing speak, certainly won’t be using that one.
If I’m ever abbreviating I usually use SM. Straight to the point, although not very explanatory to anyone that doesn’t know it or if used out of context. It still has the danger of being a bit close to S&M as well which is another story all together…

      Hi Geoff,

Yup SoMe just doesn’t cut it for me either! The SM approach works but may be a little confusing! Thanks for voting!

      Cheers,

      Mike

I voted for soc med. SoMe makes me think of Julie Andrews singing with kids dressed in curtains.

      Hi Jodi,

Haha I like that! I am going to close the poll on Friday…

      Thanks,

      Mike

Not sure if mine is a go-er (Sociam). If not, I would say SM just to be on the safe side.
