Mike Lectures Honours Students at Glasgow University

[tweetmeme source=”social_penguin” only_single=false http://www.thesocialpenguinblog.wordpress.com]

After being very keen to get out there and start talking to people about Social Media Marketing, a great opportunity arose for me to go and talk to 4th year MSC Marketing Strategy students at Glasgow University. I had a great time and hope that I gave the students plenty to think about. The lecture I delivered very much took a look at the field as a whole (it really is huge and that was one of my key points) and I used some strong case studies that showed both good and bad examples of SMM in practice.

Big thanks to Glasgow for having me and to those who helped organise it! I am really interested in speaking opportunities and can deliver overall rundowns on Social Media Marketing strategy and practices (and Marketing in general) or more industry/sector specific talks both in large or small groups.

Feel free to drop me an email – thesocialpenguinblog@gmail.com if you would like to explore this further.

The Social Penguin Blog talks to Illegal Jack’s (social media chat)

[tweetmeme source=”social_penguin” only_single=false http://www.thesocialpenguinblog.wordpress.com]

When Illegal Jack’s opened up in Edinburgh it was a more than welcome (and needed!) addition to the tex- mex scene in the city. Based on Lothian Road in Edinburgh (in the old Pizza Hut building), it’s crisp exterior caught the eye from day one, but it was not this that really caught our attention, it was their immediate Social Media presence that got us talking. The chaps at IJs seemed to very quickly build a strong SM presence, one that engaged and quickly built up dialouge betweem customers and potential new customers. We spoke to Jack about his Social Media use for the business, it makes for interesting reading…

Dealing With Negativity in Social Media

[tweetmeme source=”social_penguin” only_single=false http://www.thesocialpenguinblog.wordpress.com]

Social Media is great, as you can tell we love it and see it as a must have for business and an important tool for individuals. But it is not all sweetness and pink fluffy clouds, and besides all the good it can do, it can also cause your brand or business some major headaches if not used properly or understood. In this post we look at how to deal with negativity and the feeling of losing a little bit of brand control…

Social Media User Segmentation

[tweetmeme source=”social_penguin” only_single=false http://www.thesocialpenguinblog.wordpress.com]

The driving force in Social Media is the people that create, digest and drive content every second of everyday. The platforms are merely a place for this creation to take place. As a marketer it is very useful to try and understand the types of people that are using Social Media (and the web in general) and how it can affect the appeal of your brand, service or product and ultimately the probability of a sale based on their activities. In this post we have attempted to break people down in to user type, of course this is widely open to interpretation and we would love to hear your thoughts on the subject…

Breaking the Social Media Mould

[tweetmeme source=”social_penguin” only_single=false http://www.thesocialpenguinblog.wordpress.com]
Between Mike and Dave, we digest a lot of Social Media based content on a daily basis, whether that be via the social networks, blog or advertising, it is achingly clear that some are doing it very well, whilst others do not seem to understand how to engage with their target customers/audience. There is no sure-fire way to do this however there are measures that you can take that should help you to deliver an attractive Social Media proposition.

Social Media Helping Small Business Through Tough Times…

[tweetmeme source=”social_penguin” only_single=false http://www.thesocialpenguinblog.wordpress.com]
We thought it would be worthwhile to draw your attention to a great article from clickz.com that tells the tale of three small stateside businesses who have used a combination of Twitter and Facebook to drive real sales and awareness over the past year. People often ask us how they can make money from Social Media use and these guys have shown that is it possible, no matter the size of your business. You have to think ‘out of the box’ (such an overused phrase but it makes sense) and create promotions that engage the user and create a buzz. It doesn’t have to be massive savings, a little can go a long way.

Anyway enough from us, check out the post here!!! (big props to clickz for pulling it together)
